Why Visit?

The cemetery is at the foot of the Monchberg Hill with the Fortress perched above it. It is a beautiful cemetery and offers an oasis of peace. The cemetery also has ancient catacombs carved into the rock of the hill. Around the edge of the cemetery are the family vaults that were the inspiration for the cemetery scene in the Sound of Music movie. Here you will find the tombs of Maria Anna Mozart (Nannerl, Wolfgang’s sister) and the composer Johann Haydn.

The cemetery was probably laid out during the foundation of the monastery in about 700AD. The oldest graves date to the 13th century.  At the centre of the cemetery is St Margaret’s Chapel and the Chapel of the Cross dedicated about 1170. It was refurbished as a mausoleum in 1615.

Through the arch under the monestery is St Peters Abbey.  A Benedictine monastery and a former cathedral. It is considered to be one of the oldest monasteries in the German speaking countries. It has been in continuous use since its foundation in 696. The present day abbey church is in the Romanesque style and was erected in the 12th century.

Next to the Abbey is the StiftsKeller St Peter restaurant which has been serving food since 803!. It is claimed to be the oldest restaurant in Europe. It is here that they hold the celebrated Mozart Dinner Concerts where musicians in period dress serenade you whilst you dine. At Christmas time go for a Glüwein in the courtyard hewn from the rock of the Münchsberg for a truly magical experience.

How to Get There

There are 3 entrances into the cemetery. One is in the corner of Kapitelplazt, here you also find the old bakery with its water wheel. The second is next to the building housing the funicular railway up to the Fortress. The last entrance is between St Peters Abbey and the StiftsKeller St Peter restaurant.

St Peters Abbey is approached from Domplatz. If you go through the arches opposite the entrance to the Dom, turn left after 30 metres into the precincts of the abbey.
